The Story of the ‘Y’ in Edmonton: Celebrating 100 Years of the YMCA
Colin Hatcher, author and Bill Reese, YMCA Centennial Committee
What organization has had a great impact on many Edmontonians, famous and not so famous, for more than a century? The Y, of course. Speaker Colin Hatcher has written a lively history of the YMCA in Edmonton, and he and Bill Reese, Co-Chair of the YMCA of Edmonton Centennial Committee, will share its story. Help us celebrate the 100th anniversary of Edmonton’s Y! Refreshments will be served following the presentation.

The Story of Honoré Jaxon - The personal secretary to Louis Riel in 1885
Dr. Donald Smith, author and historian
Honoré Jaxon: Prairie Visionary completes Donald Smith’s “Prairie Imposters” popular history trilogy concerning three prominent figures who all pretended a native ancestry they did not, in fact, possess - Honoré Jaxon, Grey Owl, and Long Lance. Don’s presentation tells the story of William Henry Jackson, Riel's personal secretary, who was captured by the Canadian militia in 1885, convicted of treason and later escaped to America where he was active in the labour movement under his assumed Métis identity of Honoré Jaxon. Join us as we hear this fascinating story of a complex figure!

The Story of Two Alberta Women: Jane Priddle and Roberta MacAdams
Freda Jackson and Debbie Marshall,authors and historians
Freda relates the story of a fictional character in 1897 south Edmonton, a character on a desperate search for an English orphan boy. Debbie’s character is a real-life wartime nurse who made Alberta political history. Join us as we hear the stories of these two characters from the books, Searching for Billie and Give Your Other Vote to the Sister. The books will be available for sale and signing by the authors. Refreshments will be served.

Running Uphill, Fil captures the courage and challenges that defined the remarkable Harry Jerome, a hero to black Canadians and a runner holding seven world records. Enjoy the story of Harry Jerome from his humble beginnings in 1940, to his world records at the international games in the 1960s and finally to his tragic conclusion in 1982. The Story of Arab History in Edmonton
Richard Awid, author and teacher
Arabs and Muslims have lived in Edmonton for over 100 years. Richard will talk about the Arab/Muslim movement into the Edmonton area and tell about their contributions to our society, which eventually resulted in the construction of Canada’s first mosque, the Al Rashid. Richard will also discuss his two publications, Through the Eyes of the Son and Canada’s First Mosque - the Al Rashid.
